A dare a day (chapter six)

I sat on the table across from the guy I almost got killed watching as he slept on the couch in my living room; I knew it was a weird thing to do, but I just wanted to be there when he woke up. After they beat him to a pulp and left him to die, I called my driver to pick us both up. When we got home, I called our family doctor to treat him.

He opened his eyes slightly and when he saw me he tried standing, but he couldn’t.

“Who are you?” he asked, looking confused.

“Don’t you remember, I’m the girl from yesterday, the one that helped you..”

“Oh um, thank you.”

“Don’t thank me,” I said almost immediately.

“I thought I was going to die.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It is not your fault,” he said. I looked him in the eye, wanting to tell him how it was all my fault, but I couldn’t. “I should go.”

“No please, our doctor is coming back to check up on you.”

“Thanks, but I’m sure my parents are worried sick about me.”

“Call them, tell them you’re fine, I’ll get my phone,” I said and stood.

“I didn’t steal the purse,” he said, and I turned to him. “I understand if you don’t believe me.”

“I do,” I said and smiled then went to my room. I grabbed my phone from my bed and once I put it on, I saw a text from Zik.

“How did I get a video of you in your living room?”

I had not really thought about it; I was too busy feeling guilty, and it was obvious he wanted me too.

I ran outside to my gateman, “Did any stranger get into this house yesterday?”

“Of course not.”

“You are sure?” I asked, and he nodded, then I turned to leave.

“But,” he said, and I turned back. “Your friend Grace came yesterday evening.”

“When?” I asked.

“Few minutes after you came back from strolling?” Grace had escorted me to the front of my house then left or maybe she never did.

“She came, but I never saw her,” I said to myself.

“Is there a problem?” he asked.

“There might be.”

That evening I invited Grace to my house, she sat across from me on the dining table eating my food and drinking my wine while telling me about her day. She wasn’t acting strange like I thought she would; she was her normal talkative self, so it was either my gateman was lying or she was good at being bad.

“So are you getting ready for school?” she asked while chewing and I just stared. “What?”

“Were you here last night?”

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“I didn’t go back after I escorted you, I  came in,” she admitted. I had expected her to lie, for my gateman to be mistaken. “But I didn’t stay, I left immediately.”

“Right after videoing me,” I said, and she froze. “Why?”

“He made me do it.”

“Who!” I shouted and she jerked up, surprised.

“I don’t know, I never saw him, he sent me a text.”

“What did he have on you?” I asked because I knew that was how he worked and it was the only way Grace would betray me. She hesitated. “Tell me,” I said calmly.

“My… my sex tape.”

“You have a sex tape!”

“I know, I was stupid.”

“How did he get it?”

“I don’t know.”

“What was the name of the guy?”

“I don’t know,” she said, and I sighed. “I’m sorry, but I had no choice, and why would a guy want a video of you dancing and drinking.”

“You don’t get to ask me any question, I didn’t say I’ve forgiven you.”

“Ada, I was in a tight spot.”

“I know but just leave,” I said, and she stood.

“You would have done the same.”

“Maybe, maybe not.”
