A dare a day ( chapter nine)

I stared at the cards, frightened, wondering where he was going with them. I raised my shaking hands, then tapped a card, and he smiled and opened it. On it was the picture of a car.

“Hmm, what a boring way to die.”

“What do you mean?”

“Have you ever been hit by a car?”

“No.”

“Well, there’s a first time for everything,” he said, smiling and I stared at him confused. “You are going to jump in front of a moving car, that’s your destiny.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because your parent’s lives depend on it.”

“What!”

“Your parents are on their way back home, I’m sure you know that just one phone call, and I’ll end their journey,” he said in a way that gave me chills. I could see through his dark eyes he wasn’t bluffing. He was more than determined to get revenge for his sister, and nothing was going to stop him.

“You’re the one that made them kill themselves.”

“I gave them options just like I am giving you, you can choose to kill your parents,” he said with a cocky smile.

“Please,” I begged, desperation clear in my voice. “I’m their only child.”

“And she was my only sister!”

“Doing this won’t bring her back, neither would it give you closure.”

“The only thing that can make me change my mind is if my sister walks through that door, so don’t even try,” he said staring at me coldly.

I stood by the side of the road, where Zik dropped me to kill myself hoping for a miracle. I didn’t want to die, I was not ready to, but I was also not ready to lose my parents. I watched as cars passed at high speed, jumping into the middle of this would be insane, I was going to die. I took one last look at the world, people passing, hawkers hawking, bus conductors screaming for people to enter their bus. I said one last prayer then took a step towards my death, just then I felt someone tap me on my leg; it was a child begging for money; I checked my pocket and luckily I had one hundred naira note; I gave to the boy, and he ran away happily, making me smile. I took a deep breath, shut my eyes, and started walking. People were beginning to notice my suicidal attempt, and they started screaming for me to come off the road. Some brought out their phones to video. I heard the blaring sound of a horn from a distance; I opened my eyes and saw a truck coming towards me at high speed. I shut my eyes, folded my hands tightly by my side, and waited, for death, hopefully, I’ll die immediately. I could feel the truck inches away from me when I heard someone scream my name, I opened my eyes and turned; it was my parents screaming and crying, just then I got a text from Zik. He had made me put my phone in my pocket.

“I thought it’ll be fun for them to watch you die.”

Before I could scream or cry or do anything, my phone fell out from my hand, and then I followed, hitting my head hard on the floor.
